we have not held any matches at Oshawa since before the club allowed the handguns on the range. Since there is only one line (direction of fire ) the range needs to be shut down for the match to proceed. It is such a busy club now 900 members I am told,  it would be quite a task to push this idea thru. A lot of screaming and protest to be sure.

Centerfire Discussions / Re: Bullet Seating Depth - Best tools / methods?
« on: November 17, 2011, 04:32:32 PM »
Usually I will make a seating depth (headspace guage) with the off-cut end of the barrel.
This needs to be cut with the same reamer used to cut the chamber of course.
Once the length is established with a headspace guage then it is a simple matter to adjust for jam or jump by keeping track of the vernier calipers size wise.

Very nicely done, what TPI did you use.
DanO

Its  5/8-24 NEF Dan, Barrel is 3/4 inch at the muzzel end so 5/8 worked out well.

I try to keep one new (spare barrel) on the shelf all the time. Though the temptation to use it after every time I get beat up is hard to manage ;D. Lucky for me I do my own so finding a smith is not as much concern as finding a barrel.

I for one am going to give no turn necks a try this year. My reamer should be delivered this week. ANd we will give it a go . The Lapua brass we all use and love seems to be so consistant that I think it will work out fine. Time will tell. There are some in the USA who report that it works ok everyones mileage will vary of course. ;D

Centerfire Discussions / Re: Bedding Question
« on: November 28, 2010, 05:06:50 PM »
all my rifles are screw in, I personally have never seen an advantage to a glue in. There is a bit more work to do a proper pillar bedding job, I change things up from time to time so a screw in fits me better.

I remember reading the story Mike, I'm jealous that I don't have a decent place to try some long range shooting like that!!   It was a good read.   Regards  randy

Here are some pics for you guys.
Rifle I put togther for myself. I have discovered the 45-70 cal and really think the old timer is great.
There is no wonder in my mind why it has survived close to 140 years. In a Ruger you can make it do some wild things. Target shows 6 shots lowest being #2 (not paying attention to forend placement).
There are 5 more in the glob that measure about .520 as well as I can tell. Not bad for wheel weights eh??

Barrel is a MacLennan 16 twist.
500 gr GC bullet from a Lee mould
Healthy dose of 2015BR

Wow, thanks for that.

Does a shooter have to tailor his (or her) loads to the specific conditions for a given day, or can you use the same load generically?  If tailoring is needed, do you just adjust the load or are there other concerns as well?

Edit:  What about compensators?  I've heard about guys with wild things attached to thier barrels that are supposed to help tune the rifle.  I'm thinking like a BOSS device.  Are these devices common?  Legal?

Most guys will tune slightly for the day though you can get by without doing it. Lots of guys will go pre-loaded and still do alright. Experiance will dictate the route you will choose. As far as compensators go I think they are legal as long as there are no ports to disturb your benchmates. Tunners seem to showing up more often but no one wants to shoot beside a muzzle brake.  RAndy

I've seen re-barreled Rem 700's and some others that are indeed competitive at the club level.
They will take home the trophys from time to time. Lots of clubs will run a factory class or custom class shoot to accommodate shooters that don't have a full blown bench rig. At least we used to do this quite a bit here in ONT.
 Welcome aboard!   RAndy
