22 PPC neck diameter
« on: March 23, 2015, 08:07:58 PM »
Perhaps some experienced 22 PPC shooters can advise me.

I have a customer who wishes to have two 22 barrels ( one 12 twist, one 14 twist) chambered and fitted to his existing 6mm PPC rifle.

He will not be shooting in competitions, just informal target and varmints.

He prefers to turn the necks as little as possible and is thinking of one barrel for lighter bullets and one barrel for heavier bullets.

He will be paying for a reamer, preferably with a throat suitable for both.

I suggested chambering the 12 twist barrel and selling the 14 twist. He thinks he wants 3 barrels to play with. [22 PPC, 22 PPC and 6mm PPC.]

Some suggestions please...

Dennis

I'm just getting started with playing with my Sako Vixen 22 ppc. One thing I discovered with Lapua brass is that I HAD to neck turn to fit the factory chamber. If I remember correctly an unturned loaded round measured .254" +or- and my fired Sako factory brass measure around .252 or .253. I turned the necks so a loaded round measured .250". One more important detail that can be a show stopper is the ID of a typical bullet seater. Redding's seater for example measures a hair over .250 where the neck slides in. At least my die does. If you don't turn your necks to at least .250" you could be asking for trouble down the road when it comes time to seat your bullets. You'll end up crimping the entire neck into the bullet during the seating process. That's all I've learned so far.

....that and I'd go with a 14 or 15 twist because Opel and Mitchell sell match bullets around 50g.

Soon I'll be testing N133, N130, H335, H322 and 8208 XBR for powder.

Dan, in the .220 Beggs I had some good results with Benchmark and XBR 8208.

Right, Benchmark. Believe it or not, I've never used Benchmark ever but is a powder I've always wanted to. Go figure. Good thing there isn't a powder shortage so I can just hit WSS and buy up a pound or two.  ::) Thanks for the tip.
