Off Topic / Winter Shooting
« on: November 12, 2012, 05:14:07 PM »
I've noticed the number of posts has greatly declined since the end of the formal benchrest season ???.  Does anyone else, besides me, shoot (practice) all winter.  I have found that if I place a small electric heater near my trigger hand I can shoot in all but the coldest weather :).  It sure helps that the shooting port is protected on all sides and overtop.  That keeps the wind and snow out but the cold is still the problem.  I use my 2000 watt portable generator at the range and attach a 1500 watt electric heater to it.  As long as I dress to suit the conditions, I find that by keeping my shooting hand warm I'm good for about 1.5 hours of shooting.  Does anyone else shoot and if so, how do you deal with the cold?

Thanks Cal.  I'll give him a call.  What is the weight of the column bullets and have you tried them with VV N133 powder.  I've read about them but have never tried them.  Being a newbie at benchrest I still have a lot to learn. :o

I am looking for a source for match target bullets for my 6PPC.  I managed to find a box of 100 Berger 68 gr.FB Target (#24411) here and they seem to work well.  I have been told that the 68gr. bullet is the optimum weight for the 6PPC.  I would be looking for approx. 1000 bullets or more depending on price.  If it makes a difference I am using VV N133 powder.  Any suggestions of suppliers would be appreciated.
Thanks

Off Topic / Re: Sako 6PPC Cases
« on: September 23, 2012, 10:57:10 AM »
Just a follow up on using the Sako 6PPC brass and the Norma 6PPC brass.  Have been shooting both for about two weeks now and found the Sako to have a heavier wall thickness and required more turning to get the neck down to size.  It also required more pressure to full length resize and still required more force on the bolt to close the action.  The new Norma brass, on the other hand, seemed a lot nicer brass right from the package.  The necks turned easily and the fed very smoothly in the gun.  Resizing required minimal pressure.  As I didn't want to use my brand new gun to fire form cases (it's a newbie thing) I decided to try factory cases and am happy with the Norma.  It's to soon to tell about the life of the cases but so far I'm happy with them and have sold my Sako brass.  Thought I would give this brief report in case any of you are thinking of trying the Norma brass.

Went to a gunshow on Saturday and one of the tables had 150 new unfired Sako 6PPC USA brass for sale.  The price was good (compared to other stuff) so I bought the 150 of them.  Is this brass any good for target shooting or did I just waste my money? ???

Thanks John and Dan.  I managed to get out to the range this a.m. and tried a couple of different holding points.  I must admit that holding on a corner of the box was very awkward.  Holding centre on the mothball or at twelve o'clock on the mothball was by far more comfortable.  Thanks for the suggestions and information.  I will keep trying different ones until I really feel comfortable with one.

As a newbie to benchrest shooting I am wondering if there is a correct or preferred aim point.  I see the crosshairs on the home page set on the upper left of the target square.  I have been told that the lower left is the correct point as well as center hold or twelve o'clock high.  Is there a "correct" sight placement?  Second question, why the square at the top of the target?  As I said, I am new to the sport and have a lot of questions. ???

Looks great Bob.  The build process and pictures sure are helpful.  Now all I have to do is find an action.  My stock is rough cut but following your advice I will inlet it and bed the action before proceeding.

Thanks Calvin:
Funny thing about your recommendation.  I just got back from picking up my order from the states and the bushing sizes back ordered .257, .258,.259.  The bushing shipped .256. I am going to try to get some Norma brass to get started with.  I just ordered a 21st Century Shooting neck turning tool (Couldn't find a Pumpkin and Sinclair is out of stock on theirs as well as the bushings) so I am slowly getting to the point of actually being able to shoot the gun.

Bill and Calvin:
My gun is a .263 and the reason I don't want to fireform right now is that the gun is brand new, never fired.  I just got this gun yesterday from Jeff.  I have read on the Accurate Shooter forum that Norma has begun production again on 6PPC brass and that the new product is far superior to their old stuff.

Can anyone recommend a supplier for brass and bullets for the 6PPC.  I'm guessing only Norma makes factory brass and since I really don't want to fireform .220 Russian brass I guess I will be using the Norma stuff.  Any comments on the Norma quality.  As far  as bullets go I am open to suggestions as far a brands and weights (for 1 in 13.5inch twist).  I can't find anyone here who stocks target/match bullets.
Thanks

Bob:
Yes, I certainly would like to see a step by step process.  I am just starting a stock today (inspired by your posting on a dealer's website).  This one is for a varmint gun but it might get me to try a benchrest stock.

Hi Bob:
From one newbie to another, welcome.  I joined just last week and the people here are great.  I've already spoken to a few of them over the phone and am on information overload (they certainly are a knowledgeable bunch).

I've been reading this forum for quite some time and thought it's time to join.  Looking to buy my first benchgun (retirement gift to myself) so I will be asking questions.  There is no club or benchrest shooters in my town so I will be relying on this forum to get me started and keep me on the right track.  I'm looking for a gun in 6PPC to start with so any help or suggestions are appreciated.
