BRSC - Benchrest Shooters Canada / Gaillard sets NEW BRSC HV 100 RECORD
« on: October 08, 2010, 08:15:17 AM »
Well it is official per a e-mail from Ted this morning.

Ted is OFFICIALLY the NEW record holder of the BRSC HV100 Aggregate.  Harold Wasnie set the bar at .1918 In 2001.  Ted's record is .1828 set at the August 2010 match in Selkirk.  It was measured at the match at .1848.  If it were not for his last target it would have been a LOT SMALLER.

Congrats Ted you earned this.  That was some fine shooting that afternoon.

Look forward to seeing you in Selkirk in May.

Centerfire Discussions / Jack Neary Presentation
« on: September 28, 2010, 03:48:51 PM »
For those who may be interested.

Jack Neary, one of the many Hall of Famers, spent some time this year at some of the Major matches to share his thoughts on working with 133 and prepping Lapua Brass.  I enjoyed his presentation GREATLY.  From what I see he is an easy man to talk to and an ambassador to the sport.

Aone of the shooters who attended the Nationals video'd the presentation with permission of Jack to share with those who are unable to attend.  This Nationals was my first major match.  I urge anyone who has NEVER attended one and loses this sport to attend a match in the US.  It is a different ball game.  There will be many who are skeptical but after you attend one of these you are hooked.  I am allready trying to decide if travelling south next year will be in the cards.  The guys are first class and ready and willing to help you out by answering any question asked them.

Anyways here is a link to the 6 part series of Jack's presentation at the NBRSA Nationals in Kansas.

Enjoy.

If you enjoyed it it would be nice to hear your thoughts.

Photo And Video Gallery / GOOD Range to shoot at.
« on: August 21, 2010, 09:34:06 PM »
I got tired of trying to practice at our local range in Brandon.  Every time I go to practice there, I find it a futile attempt at trying to find a condition to shoot in.  Regardless which direction the wind comes from, how hard or light it blows, the flags will drive you FREAKING CRAZY.  Berms, trees, no trees, baffles, hole in the berm(stupid idea) more things than one can shake a stick at to muck the wind around and drive one crazy.  If there is a person who figures they can get a handle on it COME ON DOWN you are the next contestant on ATTEMPT TO CONQUER BRANDON WILDLIFE RANGE...... LOL......

Here are some pics of our local range.  The nice facility it is, I am relegating it to pistol shooting only.  Time to work more OT to buy that 1911 in 40 S&W and a Dillon press to feed the pig.  Maybe the guys have something there in all the bugging to start shooting Monday night pistol?????????

Now below are pics of a REAL range to shoot at.  3/4 section of un-bermed or baffled PARADISE.  Let the wind blow cause it is your friend and a LOT more consistent without all those berms and baffles.  I also set it up so I shoot north east........ ;D ;D

I finally got off of my KEESTER and got things set up.  Started working on putting a roof on it as well.  Have 2 posts in the ground and 2 more to go.  It is going to be 10X12.  That should give me plenty of room when I decide to close it in.  I should also be able to shoot out to 5-600 yards from there as well.  Want to shoot out to 1000, go up on the big hill and shoot across a couple hills to the far side of the 1/4.  No one to bug, harrass or litter the property but me.  Oh yah and I PICK UP AFTER MYSELF.

Enjoy

Centerfire Discussions / Registered matches and the RULEBOOK
« on: August 05, 2010, 06:20:39 PM »
I am a STRONG ADVOCATE of the rulebook.

I stand by my position that if clubs are hosting a registered BRSC match that the rule book is FOLLOWED with NO EXCEPTIONS.  If a club wants to have deviations of the rulebook it should be stated in the Pre shoot meeting and not when a incident occurs, or DO NOT REGISTER the match.  That is not what I want to see but I am NOT in control of all clubs.

I have chosen to post this rule from........

Page 19 section 6

(6) BACKERS (Moving). A moving backer strip or card will
be required for 100 yard, 200 yard, and 300 yard matches in all
registered shoots. When the backer strip or card fails to
operate at any range during a match, only the number of shot
holes that can be clearly distinguished on the target will be
counted to determine the number of shots on the target.

will be held the weekend of Aug 14-15 2010.

I will be there Friday fumbling with my rifles and gear.

Typical course of fire LV100 then HV 100 on Saturday.  HV200 and LV 200 on Sunday.

Look forward to seeing those that are coming.  Rumors have it that we can have as many as 18 shooters.

See you then.

« on: May 19, 2010, 01:22:54 PM »
Well first off I should thank Ted for deciding to put it up for sale.  I said I would have one some day and that day came sooner than later.  I am also glad I did not drag my butt deciding whether or not to buy it.  I will tell you I have only shot 6 rounds down the rifle to sight it in but I KNOW I am going to love the set up.  I have to shed about 3 oz but that will be easy.  Just remove the weight out of the stock and take some off.

Here it is mounted in all its glory on Mr. Smiley Faces........

I have been kicking the idea around of recognizing those that shoot a SCREAMER Group at a BRSC sanctioned shoot.  I initially thought of awarding a decal or patch but wanted to keep the costs to a minimum as this sport is not a money maker.  I ended up with a Certificate design that I have received good response on from some of the BRSC Executive Commitee.

To qualify for a Screamer certificate is quite simple.  Shoot a .099 or smaller at 100 yards or a .249 or smaller at 200 yards.  Have the target signed and dated by the scorer and 1 witness.   Take a photo of the 3 of you with the target, and e-mail me the photo with the particulars of the shoot and I will get the Certificate printed out to reflect your target.  Include with that info the name and address of the official scorer so I can mail the certificate to Paul for his signature and he can forward it on to the scorer for him to sign.  Not to difficult.  The Official Scorer can then present the certificate to the individual and hopefully garner a photo op.

Here is a copy of the certificate.

BRSC - Benchrest Shooters Canada / BRSC Record Procedures
« on: April 13, 2010, 07:59:31 PM »
Well another season is just around the corner and I thought it is time to inform everyone of the procedures for submitting for BRSC Records.

As many are aware Paul Ross of Calgary is the records chair.  The measuring committee members are Paul, Herb Lang from Saskatchewan and Grant Schick from Manitoba.

To qualify for a Canadian Record, your shoot must be registered with Paul and the BRSC.  You must also possess a current BRSC Membership.  The Current Records are listed on www.benchrest.ca.  If you happen to shoot what appears to be a NEW Record, the target must be signed and dated by the Official Scorer along with 2 Referees.  The backers MUST be included with the targets and the holes MUST be visible.  If ANYTHING is out of order, the targets WILL NOT be considered for a New Record.  You have 30 days from the day the supposed record has been shot to get the targets to Paul Ross.  He will measure the targets and forward to Herb and then to Grant.  The 3 results will be AVERAGED out to see if indeed a NEW RECORD has been shot.  If you have indeed broke the record a Certificate will be awarded.

There are NO EXCEPTIONS to the rules.  If you cannot get backers well I guess NO RECORD.

As an example 4 of us broke the Canadian 2 Gun Record at the August shoot in Selkirk.  We had no ideas they were records until, well, long after.  It would have not mattered regardless.  It rained so hard that the backers were just mush.  The records would not have counted.  We will try again this year.

The same rules will apply for a Canadian International Record.  As long as you are a member in good standing with BRSC and shoot a Canadian International Record at a US shoot, get the targets signed and backers submitted to Paul within the 30 day time frame.

REMEMBER YOU NEED THE BACKERS AND TARGETS SIGNED AND DATED.  It would be nice to see a photo of you as well with the scorer and referees.

I think this should sum it up.

Per Paul’s approval his address is:
Paul Ross
#26 2106 50th St. SE
Calgary, AB

Ph# 1-403-204-3343

Centerfire Discussions / New Norma 6PPC Brass some info
« on: March 26, 2010, 05:15:52 PM »
A fellow I know gave me a call the other day and mentioned he had a piece of the new Norma Brass from the local gun store.  Dave Kiff sent 4 pieces with a order that was sent to the store.

I had to get one and get some measurements off of it and see what it is like in comparison to Lapua.

First impression, looks like a fired Lapua 220 Russian case.  It appears to not have the blue have from annealing but is suspect they tumble the brass before packaging.

Overall length of my piece was 1.506"

The flash hole appears to be deburred.  When I ran my K&M deburring tool it did not remove any material.

Primer pocket cleaned up but did not have to cut nearly what I have seen my Lapua.

In regards to neck thickness I cannot say as I do not have a ball micrometer.

I did trim to 1.500 and chamferred and deburred the case mouth.

I then measured one of my Opel 64.5 gr bullets at the pressure ring and it measured at .2433".  I seated the bullet and measured the outside diameter of the neck with seated bullet and got a flat .2654"

Anyways it looks like it would be good brass for a no turn 6PPC of say .267 or .268 neck.  It would definately be a one pass cleanup for the guys/gals shooting the smaller .261/.262 necks

So has anybody dumped any charges with there Harrell to get an idea of what they are getting weight wise?

I am finding it is about .3grs for every 3 clicks(half whole number)

I was getting 29.8grs at 51 clicks and 31.6grs at 54.  I dumped some sharges in between and it appears to follow the .3grs.

This was at 20 deg celcius with my Kestrel and 36% RH in my basement man cave........

Centerfire Discussions / Shade Tree Coax top modification
« on: February 20, 2010, 05:39:37 PM »
Many of you will know I have a Shadetree rest top.  If you remember I bent the handle on mine so it would be closer to the table.  I also put a nice BIG shifter knob on the end of the stick.  The drawback was that the stick would swing  freely in the breeze.  Something you fellas in the 50's would be all to familiar with.......  ;D ;D A pain in the butt when trying to negotiate the target.  There was also some slop.  Well I will tell you fellas this, I found some Viagra and Cialis to keep it rigid and put......  ;D ;D

All it required was a slight grinding down of the handle where the screw goes into handle to hold it in place.  I ground it down just enough to be below the front edge of the bearing.  I degreased the screw and threads, mixed some 5 min epoxy, put a dab on the threads of the screw and tightened it down.  I now have a joystick that when I rotate it it stays put and does not flop around.  The screw bottoms out against the inner part of the front bearing and is held in place by the friction of the bearing just like a SEB rest.

Now I have a rest I am happy with......  Why did I buy a SEB anyways?????????
