Centerfire Discussions / Re: Bullets
« on: December 29, 2010, 10:57:45 AM »
Dan, as to some of the answers I have received, one good shooter in Michigan claimed to have been shooting boat tails for years and the reason was that it was for better or smoother seating of the bullets and that flat base bullets would be damaged at the pressure ring. He went on to say that he had no proof that this was the best but his theory and his preference and it worked for him.
From what I can tell it is the quality of the die and the jackets, everything else being held the same. The best shooting I have done was with 68 grain Berger moly,68 grain Watson's which were on a 7 ojive and Barts 66 grain wedge. All these bullets have differences, but I do believe the 7-8 ojive bullets are generally easier to tune.
I suspect that the higher ojive and double tapers can possibly shoot better as I have experienced but they seemed harder to get back in tune when things went south, this being an agg killer

Hall actions were the preferred action of Dwight Scott for years and were highly recommended. Not sure what happened but for a while Hall rimfire actions were the rave and everyone was having a hard time getting a Hall centerfire.

Calvin, apparently he owns some but he does not set them up at matches, I am pretty sure he watches the field of flags but you will need to ask him as he is the only one that really knows.

See Bill, you should have been using your wind flags :)
I have never seen Bill set up windflags at a match that I can recall, but he does pretty darn good without them. I could never do it.

On Benchrest Central there is an article on making your own flags that are quite simple but effective, even some strips of surveyors tape is a huge improvement.

Centerfire Discussions / Re: Removing moly coating from the bore
« on: December 08, 2010, 07:17:59 PM »
Generally I have stayed away from moly for these very reasons. I used moly bullets for a while and they shot fine and everything went well enough  until it stopped shooting at about 1 thousand rounds. I was having the barrel set back and the bushing that fit in the muzzle would jam tight in the breech end with over an inch cut off. Well Joe had to scrub the bore out with jb for a while to get the build up out of it, but it never was the same again. As a note, even though every one who promoted it said you did not have to clean as often but I still did any how, so it was not for the lack of cleaning.
On BR central there was a person who said that the orange abrasive hand cleaner got moly out pretty good.

Bill's trailer is ideal for someone who attends many shoots and am surprised more people don't have them, he has it set up with a bunk and there is storage underneath as well as compartments all along the top corners. The toolbox on the front is for all cleaning supplies to keep all the odors of chemicals out of trailer.
As far as Bill having another side..... well lets not go there.

Calvin, when you go to one of the major matches, it sure is fun, but also humbling when you see some incredible groups shot in tough conditions time after time. The biggest thing is to enjoy what you are doing, their will be times when things do not always go well but if you truly enjoy the sport it will keep you going till your moment to shine happens.
The Super Shoot has to be the most fun even though it is the largest. It is well run and their are so many different characters there that it will be hard not to find some new friends. Just being at the famous Kelbly range and seeing where and how they make actions is worth the trip, let alone shooting.

Rob is right in the sense that there are so few shooters that to have a serious contest to make the team is pointless unless the world shoot was to be held in Canada or the US as that is the only way enough people will be interested.I cannot speak for everyone but from my experience it was an honor  to represent our country at the world shoot in 2005 and it was a truly unique experience. The problem is for many that it is a little hard to afford traveling internationally to shoots and not to be able to use components that your rifle likes or that you are familiar with. Without some confidence in your equipment, it is a leap of faith that you can do as well as you hope, but then again you may find something your equip likes and beat all of them. If I could afford to go I would definitely get in line to go more often.

If this is the fault of a moving backer system and I was penalized 1" on a .150 legit group I sure would think twice on travelling any significant distance and putting up entry fees at that club again. The rules are to penalize cheaters, not to create misery
