Centerfire Discussions / Berger Bullets, how many interested in ordering?
« on: December 13, 2019, 07:33:20 AM »
This is going out as a feeler.

There is a potential to get a order of Berger bullets.  To keep it simple money wise, it may be based on paying in US funds.

This would be like the powder order that was done many years ago.  You say you want them you take them.  That time 32 kegs of powder were brought in and all went out the door as fast as it came in.

This guarantees the store is NOT stuck with the product.

This is to feel out the potential if it is feasible to place the order.

I am trying to assist in helping our Canadian BR shooters get bullets.

PM, email or text me.

Rimfire Discussions / Re: .22 LR Lot Testing

I tried it once.  I think it worked.

I prefer what Hoehn advised me.  The quickest way to see if a lot will work or not.  All you need is 1 box of every lot to make a choice.  I want to determine what lot is the potential on 1 trip to the range.

Then you can buy all you want of that lot and fine tune.

Many ways to skin a cat.

What tuner do you have?  Harrell's?

I have a Harrell's.  I was informed a few years ago before Ron Hoehn passed how to set up a tuner.

Ron mentioned, to foul your barrel with whatever it takes to settle it down.  Turn your tuner in all the way to zero.  Fire a 3 shot group in readable conditions.  Turn the tuner out 4 revolutions and fire another 3 shot group.  Repeat until the tuner has been moved the entire length.  I believe you will have 5 or 6 (3 shot) groups.  At some point you should hopefully see a round promising group.  Go back to that setting and shoot a group to confirm.  You then split the difference and try 2 revolutions up and 2 down  see what you get.  That is basically it in the nutshell.  Test lots with the tuner on.

Repeat for every lot you have.  When you find what seems like magic buy all you can afford.  And try to test in readable wind conditions.  What may work in the calm may not shoot in the wind.  I have had some lots that did not group well in the calm but seemed to hold there own in the wind.

My take on how I was informed to test.

I printed about 500 of those a few years back for practice at home.  The only place where it is used.

Where I shoot it is not the target that is used.  The small bull can be intimidating for those with budget rifles.

Thanks for sharing and passing this on Rick.

This can be the biggest game changer in the sport of short range Benchrest.

I want to thank Dwayne and Colleen for opening there house to myself and Amber when we make the trips to Kenora.

Thanks also to those with whom we were able to break bread with and share a drink this past year.  Phil, Louis, Ron, Lorna, Dwayne and Colleen.  We enjoyed Smith Camps and Ristorante as well as your hospitality.

Finally the matches themselves.  Kenora is a little hidden gem of a range. Tricky place to shoot, and a great bunch to compete against.

Cannot wait till next year.

200 Meter Benchrest Match Results

Rifle Division Holds 200 Meter Benchrest Match Sunday September 1st, 2019.

The last match of the season was attended by 17 shooters. The day started off with a couple hours of light rain falling straight down with almost no wind. By late morning the rain tapered off to drizzle before stopping, with continued calm wind conditions. The sun came out after lunch with light winds switching out of the west, north and east to move the bullets off their intended course. The mild wind conditions contributed to 2 new range records being set.

Well the weekend of Aug. 10/11 could not have been nicer for the first match on the newly rebuilt firing line.   The first and final match so to say.  The temps for both days were in the low 20's.  Saturday had scattered showers that started in the morning and carried on throughout the day.  Sunday brought clear skies in the AM to partly cloudy skies by the afternoon.

The 100 yard matches had some with things figured out and a few that were puzzled.  Myself as one of the puzzled ones in the AM.  After a slight change, things began to turn around in the PM.

Sunday started out with basically no wind and then the typical switchy north to NE winds.  We were fortunate to maybe have 2 targets where mirage was not a factor.  After that.  Yes Haw......the game was on.  Mirage at times where you could not see any rings.  In the end, those of us in attendance had the usual great time with frustrations and laughs.

Look forward to seeing everyone and more next year.

After almost 40 years the Selkirk Game and Fish has had a firing line facelift.

A lot of money and effort has gone into the rebuild for the membership.  Hopefully the membership will enjoy for another 40 years.

« on: July 31, 2019, 05:13:21 PM »

Left to right: Official Scorer Al Carlson, Burt Bastien shooter, Official Scorer Grant Schick.

Sunday June 30th Lake of the Woods Gun Club in Kenora Ontario held our annual 500 meter bench rest match. Burt Bastien shot this .984" five shot group on his first target in the morning. Burt was shooting a factory Cooper Montana Varminter M22 in 6br with 15-55X Nightforce scope.  Ammo was Lapua cases, Federal 205 primers, Varget, Lapua 105 grain Scenar. Burt's score aggregate was 237/250 for second place in score. Burt's group aggregate was 2.6264" for 1st place. Phil Nick's range record of 2.6125" still stands.

.984" is a small group range record that is likely to stand for a long time.
