Bill, I remember attending those shoots and I think they were a hoot, especially when you had the can am thing going. I could say more on the 2 over 18 but I won't.

Calvin, it is good to see the Canadian humor is still alive and well. I'll bet you all had a blast down there.

Off Topic / Re: Aiming Point
« on: August 22, 2012, 07:42:58 PM »
There is no correct place to hold. The aiming square was used on days the mirage was so bad the circles disappeared for large parts of a 7 minute time frame.
Personally I have done it several ways but always seemed to do best when I had my point of aim close to the impact. When conditions are tough and you have to pick or hold for conditions, it was always easier to calculate or estimate this way. They always said that you should not shoot out your aim point, but if your group is that bad it won't help much anymore.

Looks like a great range and a good turnout in the pics. I find it remarkable how many have the tubes on their scopes!

Dan, I do not remember the exact dimensions that several gunsmiths use but I do know that the dimensions you have in your chamber match what I have in a few of my barrels. They gave me the same grief and other barrels that had been done with a larger reamer had none of these issues. I to did not like going to upper level loads unless i had to and preferred some slow burning 8208 powder, but that did not help with the click and tight brass, it was the chamber.

Dan, What is the size of your base on new unfired brass? It is probably close to the once fired brass as it rarely swells much after first fire form. The swelling at the base usually happens slowly for the first 6-8 firings and the the brass work hardens and it settles in. Then it takes some pretty nasty loads to make them swell much after 10 - 12 firings, but nasty is very relevant in this sport as most loads used are over saami spec. Barrels are not always the same and can have significant pressure differences with the same load.

Dan, without having the measurements on the dies and the chamber it is hard to diagnose properly. It does sound like the chamber is to tight for the brass. It is a common misconception that the die sizes the brass all the way down, but it cannot size the part of the casing that is solid brass at the base. Under high pressure loads the base can slowly swell a few thou and if it swells to the point it is tight in the chamber you cannot fix this except to polish out the chamber area to get a little relief.
When you have a tight piece of brass, measure the base before and after resizing and it does not change. If you measure just above the base before and after resizing, you will see a difference about 1 thou give or take a half thou.
It is also a good idea to check the new brass when you get it in and check against your chamber dim., the chamber should be 2 -3 thou bigger or it is to tight for your new brass.

Cal, why stop at 15 keep going and when you get 25 benches or more it could host the World Shoot. :)
The tall bench is for those spring rains!

Congratulations Calvin, as they say, at 100 yards you just have to be close to the leaders. It will be won or lost at 200 yards and you did it!

What I found to be most helpful was to get rid of the daisies and use something that told you if the flags were tail or head wind. It is remarkable how the wind can come in and split your flags with the first 2 in a head wind and the second two in a tail wind and they all initially look like the are in a head wind, you start shooting and the wind picks up and then 2 flags flip and you are done.

The daisy actually slow the response and while they may look cool they do not do much except on real windy days if you paint one petal black. The help is minimal in my experience.

My first scope had the 1/8th dot and I loved it. I later got a scope for back up and it had a fine cross hair and at first I didn't care for it, but when that rifle started shooting better than the other, I didn't notice. I guess the moral of the story is it doesn't matter once the competition is on unless you have difficulty seeing the dot or cross hair.
Their is a great competitor in Michigan who has been very successful with 3/8" dot because he could see it quickly and center it more naturally in the 10 ring and was thinking of a 1/2" dot for his next scope.
To each their own and accuracy shooting is a journey not a quick trip!

A remington will work fine for accuracy work as long as their is no flaws in the action that put a bind in the firing system that causes inconsistent ignition and the action is relatively straight in all the key points.
A 2 oz trigger will definitely improve your ability to be able to shoot "free recoil".
Try custom bullets made on quality jackets by a knowledgeable bullet maker.
The heat shield can be as simple as a piece of target paper taped to the barrel or a piece of venetian blind, keep it simple and light as it is used on weigh in. It s only purpose is to deflect mirage from a warm barrel from interfering with your view of the target through the scope.
The square on the target was sometimes used when the mirage was so heavy that the rings on the target disappear for large amounts of time.As long as you start your group using the square for aiming on these days, you can finish your group when the circles disappear for 2 minutes. This is not a regular thing but I have seen it happen.
The 6br is a very accurate cartridge and I would suggest trying the 65 or 68 grain bullets. Maybe Dan O or Jefferson can help you with getting some.
You have to shoot over flags to know which way the wind (breeze) is blowing as it does move bullets no matter how fast they are going. Even strips of surveyors tape will tell you lots.

Bill, I am doing the math 42 + 32=74. Take that away and you still have enough room for your loading trailer. How did you sleep ? :)
So the army guys with the subs didn't stop to frisk you when they seen you walking around with your gun in your hand?
