BRSC - Benchrest Shooters Canada / Selkirk May 9/10, 2026 Results
« on: May 11, 2026, 08:13:50 AM »
Well folks.  What a hum dinger of a weekend it was at the Selkirk Wildlife Range.  If you were not there you missed out on some great conditions (insert sarcasm).  The warmest of the weekend was Friday with a high of 14 and the usual winds out the North.  Those north winds brought the cold air with them into Saturday and Sunday.   Saturday morning started out with temps about 5 deg and got to about 9 deg before it began to drop back down before we were done shooting for the day.  Sunday started out about the same but was cooler throughout the day.  Needless to say there were torque, gloves coming out and hoods pulled over ones head.  The winds were just like your windshield wipers put on high.  They almost never settled down to give you a chance to have a condition.  If it did, which was maybe for a group or 2 some lucked out.  Grant Schick took advantage of that and shot a screamer in HV 100 with an .096.  Trying to figure if one was in tune or not, well who would have known.

All in all, the small group that we are, we had many laughs along the way played to the tune of "Bang Your Head".

Thanks to Chelsea and Simaran (sp?) for scoring and running targets and to those who helped to set up and tear down the frames.

Next match is in July and look forward to warmer temps (hopefully).  Enjoy the results from the fun filled windy cold weekend.

Centerfire Discussions / My First NBRSA Nationals
« on: April 24, 2026, 12:15:31 PM »
Thought I would share.  This was my first ever NBRSA Nationals held at MillCreek Range in Kansas.  A time I will never forget along with the look from Tony when he and Faye were in the golf cart.  Rick P introduced us to Tony.  I had my rifle over my shoulder, Tony proceeded to tap the butt end of my stock.  The look I will never forget from Tony.  I will never forget it.

Anyhow I had this shirt signed by the greatest male and female shooters in SR Benchrest.  The targets were not great but I had to save them for myself and to look back when I struggle.

I still have that rifle and I believe every but one 2 gun i have won was with that rifle which I still have.

BRSC - Benchrest Shooters Canada / 2026 BRSC Nationals
« on: January 09, 2026, 08:36:55 AM »
I have had a few inquiries re the date.  The planning stages are for Sept 5 & 6, 2026.  That is Labor day long weekend.
Ideally we would have liked August long weekend but it is not in the cards.  Weather in Manitoba is still good in September.  I am aware that it sort of conflicts with the end of the NBRSA Nationals ending the weekend before for those who plan on attending it.  This makes the BRSC Nationals a true ending to the season.  More updates to follow.  Cal

Centerfire Discussions / Congrats to canadians at NBRSA Nats & Worlds
« on: September 29, 2025, 01:21:12 PM »
Short and sweet.  Congrats to all the Canadians who were present at the NBRSA Nationals and those that competed in the Worlds.

Congrats to Robert Seeman on winning the 2 gun at the Nationals and placing 2nd in the 3 & 4 Gun at the Nationals.  His points from the Nationals I believe ties him with Hugh W at 7.

Very soon one of them will make it into the BR Hall of Fame.  I do not believe there is anyone outside of a US citizen in the BR Hall of Fame.

Centerfire Discussions / Cleaning solution, my experiment
« on: August 18, 2025, 09:16:16 AM »
This is an experiment I decided to try.  Take it however you wish.
I mixed First Choice with about an inch long strip of Iosso into a small bottle with a couple small ball bearings to help mix and break down the Iosso.  The bottle is about 100ml.

This will be my new go to solvent for carbon and copper.

I looked at my barrel with the scope again today after shooting the Provincials this past weekend.  No copper or carbon at all in the grooves or on the lands.

I just ran 2 wet patches of straight Boretech or First choice to get most of the carbon out.  Wet a soft nylon brush with my solution and brushed back and forth maybe 14 to 16 times.  Let sit while I loaded with brush at the end of the muzzle.  Do about another dozen strokes after loading, 3 wet patches, dry, and oil.

The Thorro Clean and Flush works, but in the long run this is way easier on the pocket book when paying 30.00 US for a small cleaning solution kit.

Just an FYI.  I dont expect you guys to change methods but no soaking needed at all.

More results.

Once again, the usual unsteady lake winds wreaked havoc.

Not the prettiest small groups but the usual Selkirk switchy twitchy winds from the lake.

BRSC - Benchrest Shooters Canada / Selkirk 2024 Provincials
« on: August 21, 2024, 06:19:18 AM »
It has come and gone.  The weather for the weekend was as nice as one could expect.  Saturday gave switchy twitchy winds.  Sunday was a 200 yard dream.  Gentle blows that would actually come and stay for a while.

Unfortunately for this shoot many shooters had other commitments.  Hopefully they told there kids to have their babies in the winter, and not during shooting season.

When all was said and done, Grant (The Professor) Schick laid a beatdown on us.  He has got things figured out with his LV and HV.  Grant shot a nice 200 yard screamer on top of the beating.  He also took home the Everett Amundgard 2 Gun and Jim Smola HV Grand awards.  Both men were active shooters from the US back in the day.

Thanks to the few who were able to show up and hope to see you all next spring.  Thanks to Chelsea for running another smooth match and whomever helped setting up the target frames.  Without everyone pitching in our small matches would not happen.

May 20/21, 2023 is in the books.  Nine brave souls decided to battle it out this weekend.  The weekend started out Friday with many coming in early to practice and for some of us load develop as well.  Wind was twitchy as usual with the Alberta wildfire haze in the air.  Some struggled and some felt okay going into the first match Saturday AM.  Conditions for the day were high teens to low 20 with some switchy winds.

Saturday greeted us with cooler temps in the morning for the LV100.   It warmed up to around 26deg by early afternoon.  Winds were readable and very consistent.  There was none of this quick, switchy wind direction changes.  With the smoke and cloud cover mirage was basically non existant.  Some shot slow and steady across the board whilst not shooting anything really small or anything really big.  Phil Nick came out on top.  Then there were those of us who struggled.  As for me, if I was a better keeper of notes, things may go differently.  Thus, I decided to switch rifles as I did have notes for a load that worked.  Glad I did.

After a short lunch break it was into the HV100.  Again conditions were mild and readable.  This time Grant Schick had his heavy working for him as he was top dog in the HV100.  For the mild conditions there were a lot of puzzled looks at various times.  Was it load, was it me, is it the scope, did I miss something in the wind, is it my front bag or rear bag.  Regardless, there was a lot of chuckles and heckling along the way.

Sunday morning greeted us with much cooler temperatures and the wind.  Yes the ever changing switchy Selkirk winds.  Today there was no such thing as consistent winds and flags.  The mirage also decided to show up.  You had better be on the ball.  When the dust settled in the HV200, Tory Phinn  was the only one who managed to not shoot a group over 1" and became the HV200 winner.

The afternoon brought us to the final leg and the LV200.  The conditions never let up.  Unfortunately for Selkirk's newest BR shooter Curtis Peyson, whom  was recruited thru BR101, Target 1 was not so forgiving.  He managed to get 2 shots before trouble insued.  Missing primers in loaded cases.  Unfortunately for Curtis this would have a hug impact.  By the time the nearest shooter realized he was in some sort of trouble it was basically to late to lend a rifle to finish the group off.  Thanks Tory for trying.  Curtis ended up with a dreaded 6" penalty.  If it not for this penalty on the first target he was well on his way to give us a beat down in the LV200.  The eventual winner was myself, Cal Yanchycki

After the scoring was all tabulated, the HV Grand went to Grant Schick, the LV Grand to Ron McDaniel, and the overall 2 Gun to Grant Schick. Small group awards went to LV100 Tory Phinn, LV200 Cal Yanchycki, HV100 Grant Schick and HV200 Grant Schick.

The decision was also made to award the Everett Amundgard HV Grand Aggregate award along with the Jim Smola 2 Gun award.  Both of these gentlemen were long time shooters in Selkirk during the early years.  Grant told a little history about them.  Grant was fortunate to win both of the awards.  Grant last won these in 1993 and 1991 respectively.  1993 the Everett Amundgard and 1991 the Jim Smola.  It was a long time come for him.  Traditionally these are awarded in August after the Selkirk Provincial match.  Due to hosting the BRSC Nationals the end of July, the decision was made to not have the August Provincial Match.

Regardless of everything that went on, good, bad, or ugly I am sure we all enjoyed the weekend of Heckles and chuckles.  Thanks go out to Tory and Curtis for providing donuts and muffins.  Chelsea Schick for running and scoring the match.  Carmen McDaniel for helping Chelsea and learning how things run on Sunday.   She may be our future scorer.

The next and final match of the year will be the BRSC Nationals July 29/30, 2023.  Hope to see everyone from far and wide there.  Currently we have 27 registered of a possible 28.  Registrations run from NW Ontario all the way to Vancouver Island.  Sure would be awesome if everyone could make it.  It looks to be a great shoot.  I will be touching base with all registrants in early July to confirm.

Final note, not mentioning any names, we currently have 4 prize donors that are worth the price of admission alone and waiting to hear from a few more.

Hope to talk and see y'all soon.

Cal Yanchycki

BRSC - Benchrest Shooters Canada / 2023 BRSC Nationals Update
« on: November 23, 2022, 09:18:55 AM »
Just a quick update.

I have been getting a lot of questions when it will be contested.  Normally the Executive Committee at the Selkirk Game & Fish sets the schedule the first meeting in January.

After some discussions with Grant, we are unable to host it on a Long weekend.  Initially the plan was August Long weekend, unfortunately Selkirk will be hosting the IPSC Canadian Nationals that same weekend.  They will be needing the entire facility for that event.

We have decided that the BRSC Nationals will be held July 28-30, 2023.  That is the information I can pass on at this time.

Stay tuned in the new year for more updates.
