Club Events / Mission - February 2020 Benchrest Score Shoot
« on: February 03, 2020, 03:11:46 PM »
We shot Score at our regular monthly match.  After a couple of days of torrential rain and flooding, the day started with a small snowstorm.  If you didn't like the weather, you could wait a minute and by the end of the match the snow was mostly gone.  As usual, conditions started very calm for the 100 yard portion, but began to get interesting for the 200.  And, in the end, the groundhog did not see his shadow.

Congrats to Chad on his close win!  Only 3 points separated the top 3 shooters.

Thanks to Pete and his friend for preparing the targets and backers and to Pete for the scoring.  Art took our money and called the match.  Target running was very much a group effort - Thanks all.

Next month we will shoot Score again on March 1 - Hope to see you there.

And this month's results...

And here are the cumulative results for the Benchrest Shooter of the Year.  These will no doubt change as we move to the matches with a larger number of participants and the "5 best" starts to take effect.  Questions, corrections and suggestions gratefully accepted!

Hugh Williamson Precision / Re: Real World Results With HWP Barrels
« on: January 16, 2020, 12:31:55 PM »
Just got the targets back from the BRSC Records Committee - New Canadian Light Varmint 200 yard Agg record of .1896, shot at Rosebud, 2019 Alberta Provincials with a HWP barrel.

Was fun to go back to my match notes and see how it developed...

The details - 13.5 twist, button rifled.

Thanks Hugh!

Club Events / Mission - January 2020 Benchrest Score Shoot
« on: January 06, 2020, 04:41:11 PM »
We shot Score at our regular monthly match.  The weather forecast promised 40 kmh winds, but the day started with almost no breeze and the mist hanging on the mountains.  However, after the 100 yard events things started to pick up until the wind really made its presence known for the last target of the day.  9 hardy shooters showed up to compete.

Chad had problems with bullet stability to begin, but after a little group think he picked up considerably at the 200 yard distance.  Ray pointed out a scoring or transcription error on one of his targets, but in a bit of poetic justice he retained his place after the resulting 3-way tie was broken.

Thanks to Joe for preparing the targets and backers and calling the match.  Art was unable to make it, so to Pete stepped in as scorer - Thanks.  Target running (and resetting the 200 yard target stands which blew over!) was very much a group effort - Thanks all.

Next month we will shoot Score again on Groundhog Day (February 2) - Hope to see you there.  Remember we'll be tabulating results for Benchrest Shooter of the Year honors this year - I'll post the accumulated results from February onward.

And this month's results...

Club Events / Mission - November 2019 Benchrest Score Shoot
« on: November 11, 2019, 09:52:17 AM »
We shot Score at our regular monthly match.  7 shooters were treated to a lovely autumn morning, with a little bit of fog and the matching mild conditions to begin.  After the 100 yard targets, only 6 points separated the field.  Conditions picked up a little as the sun burned the fog off at 200 yards.

Congrats to Dave, who won the Agg and the 100 Yard as well.

Thanks to Joe for preparing the targets and backers and calling the match.  Thanks to Pete, Art and Joe for running the targets and to Art for scoring and organizing the finances.

Next month we will shoot Group again on December 1 - Hope to see you there.

And the results...

Club Events / Mission 22 Rimfire Benchrest - September 28, 2019
« on: September 30, 2019, 09:21:14 AM »
A thin turnout of 9 shooters participated as the weather started to turn cold.  Ray organized the match, took our money and called the line.  Also thanks to Mel and Derek for scoring.

Conditions were outrageous, and the scored reflected that, with autumn leaves swirling across the range.  Little change in the yearly leaderboard as most everyone turned in their worst performance of the year.  Congrats to Mel on the win - He showed us that the wind can be your friend.  One other notable performance was Dominic, who almost equalled his best performance to date shooting on the second relay without any wind flags!  (Better not tell him that flags can help...)

Next match is October 26 - Last chance for fame and glory, at least for this year.

Here are the results, sorted by class and rank.  Additions and changes to the equipment gratefully accepted.

...and here are the ongoing numbers for the year-end title.  You have to shoot at least 5 matches to get a reasonable average...

I believe the spreadsheet is correctly calculating the top 5 - Please bring any errors to my attention!

Club Events / Mission - September 2019 Benchrest Group Shoot
« on: September 16, 2019, 08:47:11 PM »
We shot Group at our regular monthly match.  A relatively thin turnout of 7 shooters shot the morning after the first fall rainstorm of the year.  Conditions were almost dead calm, a rarity for our range.  With that said, results were disappointing at best!

Thanks to Joe for preparing the targets and backers, calling the match and doing the scoring.  Thanks to Pete, Art and Joe for running the targets and to Art for organizing the finances.

Next month we will shoot Group again on October 20 - We need the practice!  Hope to see you there.

Ray is back in action, organizing things, taking our money and calling the match.  Also thanks to Mel, Derek and Man Kay for scoring.

Conditions were fairly mild, although there were some surprises as always.

Next match is September 18 - Hope to see you all there.

Here are the results, sorted by class and rank.  Additions and changes to the Equipment List are appreciated.

Mission Rod & Gun hosted a full house of 24 shooters from across Canada as well as the US to compete in the 2019 BRSC Group Nationals.

Our west coast weather provided 3 different challenges for practice as well at the 2 days of competition - Conditions were interesting to say the least.

Joe Mendham used his years of experience on the range to bring home the 2 Gun trophy.  Congrats to him as well as our other winners.

Frank Oblak returned from the North to run the targets and call the match, and Jeffrey Insel did a fine job of scoring.  Many others lent a hand to moving the backers and general setup for the match - Thanks to you all.

Special thanks to all competitors, especially those who traveled to attend.

Next year's match will be held in Calgary - Hope to see you all again.

Here are the results:

Our annual BR50 Championship has been renamed in honor of the late Bob Goehring who was the driving force behind Rimfire Benchrest in the Lower Mainland.  We miss him greatly.

Ray returned to his position as money taker and match runner.  Ray also did a stellar job of filling the prize table for this event!  Also thanks to Mel, Derreck and Man Kay for scoring.

And thanks to our sponsors!

We welcomed Dave, Mike and Tammy from Vancouver Island - Thanks for taking the ferry ride to participate!

Conditions were quite mild and the scores reflected that.

Next match is August 24 - Hope to see you all there.

Club Events / Mission - 2019 Jim Latham Memorial VFS Shoot
« on: July 13, 2019, 02:36:23 PM »
Weather was chilly and drizzly for the seventh annual Fraser Valley VFS Championship.  While conditions seemed benign, there were things happening on the range...

As usual, we started at 300 yards followed by 200 and 100 yardages.

Thanks to all our shooters for participating and keeping the schedule tight.

It was definitely a group effort - Joe ran the match and prepped the targets, Pete, Vlad and Allan ran the targets and Art did the scoring.

Grand Agg:  1st Joe Mendham, 2nd Ted Veale, 3rd Art Harder
100 yard Agg:  1st Aubrey White, 2nd Art Harder, 3rd Joe Mendham
200 yard Agg:  1st Joe Mendham, 2nd Ted Veale, 3rd Mark DuMont
300 yard Agg:  1st Joe Mendham, 2nd Ted Veale, 3rd Dan Zaccanti

Club Events / Mission - June 2019 Benchrest Score Shoot
« on: June 27, 2019, 12:54:58 PM »
Nine shooters showed up to shoot Score for our June match as a runup to the Jim Latham match in early July.  We shot 200 and 300 yards using the 10 - 11 scoring system.

Spring conditions with moderate switchy conditions.

Joe prepped the targets, Pete and Vlad took care of running and stripping the targets,  and Art handled scoring.  Thanks to all!

Next match is the Jim Latham Memorial on Sunday, July 7, and don't forget the BRSC Group Nationals on August 3 & 4.

And the results...

With Ray away, Paul stood in as money taker and match runner.  Also thanks to Mel, Derek and Man Kay for scoring.

We welcomed Dave, Mike and Tammy from Vancouver Island, and they proceeded to show us how it is done.  We need to keep telling ourselves that competition improves the breed.  Seriously, we do hope they return soon.

Conditions were tricky, with shifty spring breezes.

Next match is July 27, the Provincial Championships - Hope to see you all there.

Here are the results, sorted by class and rank.  Additions and changes to the Equipment List are appreciated.

...and here are the ongoing numbers for the year-end title.  Once again, you have to shoot all matches to get a reasonable average until more than 5 matches have passed.

Now I have to get myself some more wind flags...

First, just wanted to thank Jeffrey Insel, who stepped up to score the match after a last minute call.  (Paul, our regular scorer, was caught in Kelowna with a light aircraft and bad weather - A better than average excuse!)

Thanks to all who participated - Some drove a fair distance.

Too many people involved in organizing and running things to thank individually, but a great job done by all.

Weather was interesting - High on Saturday was 13.5 degrees, with 16 mm of rain.  High on Sunday was 23.1.  This sort of weather change made for some interesting conditions.  As Joe pointed out, there were some small groups, but there were some real clangers as well.  It's also interesting to compare the conditions to those from the Heavy Iron shoot in Calgary.  Next year, we have to plan our shoots for different weekends!
