Benchrest Shoot #4 at Mission Rod and Gun Club: Sunday, June 10, 2012

Another cold, damp and slightly breezy midwinter day, except it was June 10th! Once again the Meteorologists lied. Maybe they are in training for politics! No problem with Global Warming at the Mission Range. I could swear the next Ice Age had started moving down on us. However this did not dampen the spirits of the 8 shooters who braved the elements for the Shoot. We had two new shooters. If all our shooters managed to make it we would have taken up the entire range! As it was there were a few other shooters who came up so there was enough room for all and everyone played nice and had a good time. It is always interesting to watch the others saunter over to see the targets we have fired with our itty bitty 6 ppc’s. I make sure someone like Joe’s targets are sitting on top of the pile where almost every shot is a 10 or an X. But it does intrigue them and almost every time someone asks about the Benchrest Discipline when they see what these guns and some of the shooters can manage.  Highlight for me is always the new shooters. We now have our first female shooter, Bob Hampton’s wife, Dori, so the dropped shots now illicit comments like “darn” instead of “$%##$$%^^&**”  Joe did his usual great job of mentoring. I had promised newcomer Wally McDonald that if he came to day it would be the best $5 he ever spent. He said afterwards it was, but he did not offer to pay me an extra $5. Both shot very well indeed. Congratulations.
The course of fire for this match again was five 100 yard Hunter score targets. This time we threw in a Racoon fun target to finish the day. Maybe I should get back to shooting real varmints as I managed a score of 50 on that target today, something I have never done before. For me following the bypass surgery it was just great to be able to shoot again, period!
Despite the very cool day everyone shot very well; I think everyone had a personal best. Special congrats to Joe for setting a new record which he intends to rub into arch rival Chris Klump.
We were very pleased to have a visitor with us from Sunshine Coast Rod and Gun Club, Rob Finnigan where they also have a few Benchrest shooters and he informed me that Powell River has some as well. Hopefully we are going to be able to get a few of us joining up with one another for some good meets.
Following the match and scoring everyone went to go the clubhouse for coffee, lunch and lies. It was good to see many folks using the Clubhouse food services and enjoying the camaraderie after the match. It was a very big day for the concessions.
We welcome newcomers and if more information is wanted please contact me,  Jim Latham, at lathamconsult@telus.net or phone me at 604-795-0618. Please feel free to pass this summary on to anyone you wish who may be interested.

Next match is planned for Sunday July 22nd, meeting at the Rifle Range at 8:30, Match commencing at 9:00, completing at 11:30 with Coffee, Lunch and Lies to follow at the Clubhouse.
Please note that we do not shoot in August or September due to the Public Range Use but that our BIG MATCH is October 14th

For those of you wondering about the scores over 50 per target, we score the pencil dot center as an 11 rather than counting as X rings. But touching that dot is no easy task. A couple of guys were thinking they should build a .338 ppc just to get a wider bullet!!

Centerfire Discussions / New Canada Customs Procedure
« on: April 23, 2012, 09:44:33 PM »
Got this in e-mail yesterday:

---------------------------

As you are now aware, the Canadian Firearms Registry for long guns is
finished except for Quebec at the moment. Please take a moment to review the
new Customs Notice 12-013 procedures below for Canadian residences returning
to Canada with your firearms. You will have to stop at Canadian Customs
southbound and get a Form BSF407 completed listing your firearms you will
have in USA now or in the future. It replaces the old Y-38 that we used
prior to the long gun registry. The firearms registration certificate is no
longer proof of ownership of a long gun firearm as they can now be freely
sold without proof of new ownership. Your PAL must be valid and accompany
you with the new form BSF407.

Customs Notice 12-013

Changes to the Import Requirements for Non-restricted Firearms

April 13, 2012

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/cn-ad/cn12-013-eng.html

Canadian Shooters who apply with the ATF Form 6NIA in the future may omit
the Registration Certificate number using N/A in question 15 but must still
list the full description of the firearms. You must also list your PAL
number in Question 12. See the following link for more details.

Centerfire Discussions / BR201 - Jack Neary - Calgary
« on: February 06, 2012, 08:20:26 PM »
I am pleased to announce we will be offering a Benchrest 201 Clinic in 2012. This will be on Saturday, March 31st.

This is somewhat different than the BR101, in that it is meant as a strictly classroom exercise. It will be structured to include a thought provoking presentation with a leading National level shooter. In this case we are lucky to have Jack Neary of Ohio join us and give his thoughts on what it takes to be competitive in BR. For those that are unfamiliar with Jack’s resume, he is widely recognized as one of the top shooters in the world of short range BR. Jack is a member of the USA BR Hall of Fame and member of the USA World Championship BR team.

You can see more of Jack on the benchrestcanada youtube channel:

http://www.youtube.com/user/benchrestcanada?feature=mhee

This session will focus on the short range (100-200 yd) world of group shooting.

This clinic will appeal to the BR shooter, or accuracy enthusiast, or competitive rifle shooter. The clinic is open to anyone who is interested. You do not have to be a BR shooter or club member to attend.

The session takes the better part of a full day, so you will need to plan accordingly. We will start at around 9:00 AM with a presentation by Jack Neary. Then a lunch break (likely a pizza lunch) and the afternoon will be an open format Q/A session. I expect to be done around 4:00 PM

The session will be near the Calgary airport, either at a local hotel or a nearby office/classroom. Exact location to be advised.

I need about 10 students at $200/ea to cover the costs associated with this session, so I need any interested students to contact me and get registered. If we get more than 10 students any excess funds above the costs to hold the school will be refunded to each student. This is stricty a cost recovery effort.

To register please contact me at the phone number or e-mail below. Also free to contact me if you have any questions.

About This Forum / 14 Year Anniversary
« on: December 17, 2011, 09:26:27 AM »
Hard to believe 2 years have passed since this forum was fired up. I am pleased to say it has had a positive effect on attracting new shooters and bringing old shooters back into the fold. Participation is up at the matches. 2012 is shaping up to be another excellent year in BR. Once again we will be running BR101 at Rosebud and it looks like we will be running BR101 at another soon to be announced range in Alberta. Something new will be a guest speaker at what I am calling BR201. This will take place in Calgary, and will be a one day Q/A session with a Current BR Hall of Fame shooter. Best wishes to everyone in 2012!

ORSA - Ontario Rifle Shooters Association / Elmira Score Shoot Nov 20, 2011
« on: December 08, 2011, 04:01:36 PM »
Thanks to Gord O for these results! Take note Ontario uses an X=11 scoring system, hence a perfect match would be 55 instead of 50-5X.

I am putting this post up with the permission of Dave Abbott who is our WBSF delegate. It is not too early to begin thinking about participating in this event.

Details for the match can be found at http://www.wbc2013.com.au/

One of the first steps anyone who is interested in competing at this event needs to do, is to become a member of the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH). Under WBSF rules only one organization from each country can submit a team. OFAH is the recognized organization for Canada. In order to be eligible for the team you will need to be a member in good standing with OFAH during 2012 and 2013. Take note the 2013 team will be selected during 2012. OFAH is a strong supporter of the World Team and this is very much appreciated by the shooters.

Interested parties can obtain an OFAH membership by mailing a cheque for $33.50 to:

Dave Abbott

Club Events / NBRSA Nationals - Midland
« on: September 13, 2011, 07:34:24 PM »
Not sure if any other Canucks are going other Dan O and myself so here is a tasty description of the range courtesy of Tim Oltersdorf that is sure to make you want to join us in this treck:

Midland, the land of enchantment awaits you.

Mike Conrey has been busy prepping the Midland range for the upcoming NBRSA nationals and many new improvements have been made. Among these are the following:
The date has been changed to Sept. so as not to coincide with tarantula breeding season and the excitement that routinely occurred in the men's restrooms every morning during the last nationals should be gone.
That pesky thorny plant known locally as the devils tail that used to grow in the loading area has been largely eradicated with the judicious use of a flame thrower and hence no ambulances will be parked at the range blocking the shooters access to the firing line.
The rattlesnake den at the 100 yard line seems to be abandoned because of the drought. This should speed up the target changes.
A new liquor store, titty bar and The National Museum Of Dirt have opened up at the corner of Rankin highway and I-20 tripling the entertainment opportunities in Midland.
A full size wind generator has been erected on the range to supply electricity. Of course the current will vary with the local wind speed. Expected voltage will be between 450-650 KV during the match.
Best of all a full time grief counselor has been hired to assist those shooters who have chosen to shoot the four gun. Tim

I have a question for the more senior of our participants  ;D, does anybody know if any Canadians have accumulated any Hall of Fame Points? Just curious, and with the NBRSA site down, I can't access the list of points winners.
