BRSC - Benchrest Shooters Canada / Re: Kenora Score Match
« on: May 01, 2023, 08:05:15 AM »
Another great and enjoyable shoot.  If you ever get a chance to shoot a VFS match in Kenora, do it.  The wind and switchy conditions make it a humbling place.  One day you can lay down good scores, the next look out.  You find or dial a condition and things are going good until it never wants to come back.  Then you scramble to the sighter and have to hold off about 2 rings and pray that there is NOT a sudden flip in the flags......  I suffered that.....Some of those gusts were nasty.

Otherwise fun time as usual, great comradary, good lunches,(Steve did a great job on the burgers), and the evening get togethers at the Nick's and supper at Ristorante.

Tell we see you in August.

For those of you who may be traveling with your spouses, and they may not want to just hang around the hotel or range, there are many places not that far away to visit.

If you are a Casino person, there is South Beach Casino within a 1/2 hr drive of Selkirk.  https://www.southbeachcasino.ca/

Beach person, Grand Beach just a little further north of the Casino.  I believe was rated at one time in the top 10 in the world.  https://www.travelmanitoba.com/directory/grand-beach-provincial-park/

History, Lower Fort Garry National Historic Park just south of Selkirk.  https://parks.canada.ca/lhn-nhs/mb/fortgarry

Canadian Human Rights Museum located at The Forks downtown Winnipeg.  https://humanrights.ca/?gad=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwrpOiBhBVEiwA_473dGRpnM1xb1rvP9Rw0HRxv-iUuRCo-hV7S-YMjHQl--JGAChbnggsaBoCutEQAvD_BwE

The Forks Market itself is a nice afternoon destination.  https://www.theforks.com/

Finally another nice drive and stops along the way is cottage country on the way to Gimli thru Winnipeg Beach.

Any questions, feel free to contact me at anytime.

Find attached a map with the shortest route to the Canalta Inn in Selkirk.  I have also included a map from the Canalta to the range for those of you who have not been to the range.

Figured a quick update.  As of today I believe the count is at 26.  Hope's are that everyone is able to come when we get closer to the date.  We have people signed up from Western Ontario all the way to Vancouver Island.

Shortly, I will get a Map up with the quickest directions  from Winnipeg to the Canalta Inn in Selkirk and from there to the range.

Well the picture speaks for itself.  Great shooting to Rick and Hugh.  What a way to break the winter blues.

As of today, I have 19 names that said they will or plan on attending.  Some of the locals I am assuming they will be there.  I have 4 possibles but I have not heard officially from them.

I know it is early in the year and things can definately change by then.  I am hoping they do not and we get to meet some of you guys from afar.

We will be capping registrations at 2 relays, 28 shooters.

I will be updating as the days weeks months get us closer to the date.

A few questions have been asked.

Re accommodations,

Canalta Hotel in Selkirk, newest place.  Restaurants close by are BP and Tim Hortons.  C-Tire next door, Walmart across the street.  Quickest to range, just over 10 minutes.

Selkirk Inn & Conference Center.  Restaurant is the Smitties next door.  Approx 20 minutes to range.

South Beach Casino, approx 30 minutes north of the range on Highway 59.

Camping, there is plenty of room to park travel trailers if you so desire.  No power available.

Loading trailers, can accommodate those as well and power we can supply for them.

Fridge, coffee maker, barbecue on site.  Water is not potable.  Bathrooms in the clubhouse.

Preregistrations, let's deal with that in the new year.  Let's get thru this holiday season.  Knowing the numbers is a help.  Would be nice to have a Saturday barbecue after the shooting.

Stay tuned.

Just a quick update.

I have been getting a lot of questions when it will be contested.  Normally the Executive Committee at the Selkirk Game & Fish sets the schedule the first meeting in January.

After some discussions with Grant, we are unable to host it on a Long weekend.  Initially the plan was August Long weekend, unfortunately Selkirk will be hosting the IPSC Canadian Nationals that same weekend.  They will be needing the entire facility for that event.

We have decided that the BRSC Nationals will be held July 28-30, 2023.  That is the information I can pass on at this time.

Stay tuned in the new year for more updates.

I should add to this, thanks for the Selkirk Wildlife for letting us  use the clubhouse and range.

The other is Tory, Ron and Grant for giving of there time towards the clinic.  I am sure this is the first of many.

Finally, out of this clinic it appears a few want to venture down the slope.

All we ask as BR shooters if you know of any potential leads of BR rifles, Please let us know by PM.  If anything a BR shooter likes to see a BR rifle in the hands of one who will use it for it's intended purpose and not tear it appart and send it to the gopher patch

Well, the day has come and gone.

Ended up with 7 students.  Morning was the basics of the sport.  After lunch break, the shooting of the rifles, some loading etc.  This could have gone on until dark.

When the smoke cleared, a lot of thanks and compliments, and a hearing of, "looks like I will be looking for a rifle".

There were things that we did not even get to touch on but the comments were enough.  I just asked that if they know of anybody in there circles to pass the word out.  It was a start I think a very successful one.

In my eyes one of the least experienced guys at the clinic took to the rifle like he had been doing it for years.  Luckily he is young and decides to eat the fruit.....lol

I never had a chance to grab pictures but maybe some of the guys will share with me to share later.

Well we conquered the elements.

Friday wind with gusts to about 80kmh and on and off light rain.  Temps for Saturday and Sunday did not get much above 12 deg C.  Winds though were readable both days but with some weird stuff going on downrange.  Not sure of rifle setup issues or the new intermediate backstops causing all of the grief.  Some had issues Saturday but were able to solve those and end up shooting much better Sunday.  Could not speak for myself, still puzzled.  It was a small turnout.  Well not many shooters left.  Hopefully BR 101 can slowly change that around and a much needed change in our Federal leadership.  Fuel is a real killer right now.

Anyway, Congrats to Dwayne Cyr on his 2 Gun.  Tory Phinn 2nd and I do not how I ended up 3rd.  Until August.......

Finally thanks to Chelsea Schick for running and scoring a great match as usual on her Birthday.  Happy Birthday once again Chelsea.  How old I'd you say you were?  LOL......To Grant and the guys that helped set up, move the target frames thanks.
