Photo And Video Gallery / Once around the shop!!
« on: March 13, 2010, 06:20:13 PM »
rained all day here today and I felt a tiny bit ambitious. I put an octagon on a couple of old Rail gun barrels.
One full the other half. I'll mount these on actions and try them out. Should be great for a varmit rifle.
Or just to blow out brass for the 243 Ackley.      I got a little carried away with the TOOL purchases after I started shooting Benchrest as you can see.

Well it's not a 6BR but it is an  8-twist.  Shot my .243 Ackley at 300 yds this morning and was pleasantly surprised. Load data is on the target, high shot was a tight chambering case (for those that don't size their cases down enough and wrestle with the gun!!) Gun is one of my own creations , MacLennan barrel,
Jewel 2 oz (with safety) 16X Weaver T series (older steel tube model) Sometimes it doesn't make sense why a paticular load (70 gr bullet) will shoot so well . Every barrel is a rule onto itself .

I made an 8 twist 6br about 10 years back that shot really well out to 300 yds . I never had a chance to try it at any yardage past that. Oddly enough I throated the barrel for VLD style bullets but it shot the light ones really well too. Good luck!!

Thats just NUTS . You got to really like them if you are going to pay that much for one. Just don't buy into any idea that they are going to make much differance in the way your gun shoots.

Most guys I've seen and myself included don't bother with a scale at the range when a match is going on.
You will hear lots of guys talking about 50 clicks or 52 clicks or whatever their measure uses. We use precision powder measures (Harrell, Jones, Culver style, etc) loads can be weighed at home and then fine tuned at the range on the day. (up or down a few clicks) though a lot of these small electronic scales are showing up lately re MTM  Hornady etc.  you would have a very hard time proving to most that .2 tenths of a grain makes a viable differance on the target ina PPC or BR size case. And when you are talking larger cases than that then a bigger differance will be tolerated. Say .5 grains in a .308 case. Its nice to have it nailed down and I suppose it will raise your confidance level but reality says the condition plays the biggest variable so .2 tenths means more in your mind than on the target.

Randy the barels on your rifles, what weight barrels are those?  What is the muzzle diameter on the barrels?

They look small like what I have been shooting.

Calvin
They are all MacLennan LV contour close to 5lbs 2 oz at 22 inches .they are about .920 at the muzzle.
The bench guns are all right on 10.5 lbs LV class

I shot a Wichita when I first started. 3 lugs at 60 deg. This really is a robust action well made and in there day I think some of the big name boys used them. The action is full bolt as well (like a Hall) only .875 diameter. But the word that best describes these type actions (as per Rob MacLennan) is CLUNKY. Bolt lift was measurabely heavier.

Brent   My .02 cents for what they are worth.
3 and 4 lug actions generally require more force on the bolt handle to open and cock this translates into more movement of the gun in the bags. (your cocking cam must be steeper to handle this in 60 or 45 degs thus the extra force reqired) Bit of a concern when you are trying to shoot fast ie running a condition. The high-power crowd (belly floppers!!) move their guns around so much it doesn't seem to affect them the same way. There are fewer 3 and 4 lug actions in short range benchrest.

Hi Brent
I have made 4 similar to what you describe. Rick is right don't make half the project it won't fly.
If I can offer advice let me know. Its a bit trickey to make a bolt, but  you will be glad you did it all.
Here are some pics.  7075 Aluminum  4140 Pre-hardened insert.  Jewel triggers on hangers. Basically a Stolle with some small changes (footprint is the same for stocking)  Good luck.

We always tease the seller with the idea that If the buyer could see the targets that the seller made that day he would never be able to sell it. ;D

Nice looking Swindelhurst!!   I was fortunate enough to have had a lot of guidance from Vic before I made my own Actions. Vic also showed me what he knew about making bullets and bullet dies.Well not really what he knows has I'm sure he has forgoten more than I know already. Great Guy!! I did manage to make some 6mm and 22 cal dies that produce good bullets. I try hard to champion the 22 at some of our matches  (Sorsa) I'll be puting together a 22 -100 this winter. I originally shot a straight 220Russian (tight nK) but the large body taper (along with a tiny error in the reamer dim wise) made it hard to open on any action other than one of Rob MacLennan's that I used to own so I gave up on it. I've tried the 22 PPC but believe as most do that it has  just a bit too much capacity . Pic shows a drop port that I put together last summer.

I play with cast bullet stuff too. Is that a .40 or a .45 Those rifles are relatively hard to come by, don't be in a huge hurry to let it go. What are you going to make with Vic's action?? I am redoing a Ruger #1 in either 45-70 or 45-120 as soon as my barrel comes through. I have a Uberti Highwall 45-70 and a Pedrosoli Sharps that shoots really well. So far I have remained somewhat a traditionalist when it comes to the sights on the 45's shooting irons but the Ruger will wear glass.
