I use the grinder that is on the picture beside the stock. Grit 50 sandpaper, dust collector, and I finish with an orbital sander

Thanks for the information. That looks like good work for "free handing" the dimensions.

Do you think the same tools would work for balsa laminate? I want to make a carbon fiber stock along the lines of a Scoville, but need to make up the core to be wrapped. I am not too sure how best to shape the balsa core. I guess I will just need to make one up and give it a try.

Fergus, Have you considered trying a Surfoam rasp style tool to do the rough shaping of the balsa?

By far the most important aspect of first aid is to have someone present who is trained in first aid.
A kit is only helpfull if one knows when and how to use it.
In my opinion, first aid courses should be mandatory in high school and essential to parenthood.
There should be no lack of knowledge in the shooting community to deal adequately with emergency first aid.

Bob,

Chances are I will be at the BR competition in Sandhill on Aug 12 next with a Robertson JTR stocked rifle.
The range is not too far from Thetford Mines and you would be welcome to take some measurements then. You would also see lots of examples of free recoil shooting. Bring a rifle for some shooting at 200 yds.

Ray,
Welcome!
If your experience in discovering benchrest shooting is anything like mine you will get enormous fun and satisfaction from it. Good luck and once we know what area you live in you will probably get offers of help.

Have fun, Mike

With both powder throwers that I use for N135, H322 and Varget, it is necessary to tap the measure to get consistent packing of the powder. Tapping also works as a timer to ensure that the handle is not operated too quickly. Would the level of powder in the bottle be a factor? I try to keep mine from running too low.

My suggestion is to read the rules first so that you don't head in the wrong direction with your bench equipment set-up. It is not clear to me how working outside the rules is to any advantage anyway.

Along intuitive lines, I would avoid crushed glass used for sandblasting because of its sharp edges. What would be the problem with rounded grains either from used mineral blasting grit or as from the beach as long as it is clean?

32
Without presuming to know would be best for your needs, I have found that the finer sand used for sandblasting will usually make the bag heavier than when filled with 'playground' sand. Sand sold for sandblasting is readily available in different grain sizes and is very affordable. Auto supply stores often have some or can tell you where to get some.

Re powder chuckers (chuckle :)) yes throwing charges is perfectly OK although a scale would still be needed to get a weight for a given setting. The one I see most often at the races is the Harrell's measure but there are other good ones. The ones with a micrometer insert make it easy to return to a given volume.
The Lyman 55 is very difficult to repeat a setting without the help of a scale. The humble Lee Perfect powder measure rates very well for consistency although durability might be lacking.

As far as where to buy, there are several Canadian sources that mail order and you probably already have a Sinclair catalog no? Canadian Access is a good monthly to subscribe to for gun stuff in Canada.

I bought my Barnard action from Robertson Composites in Ottawa.

Regarding the Caldwell Rock BR front rest, it does not sound like you have a lot of potential for borrowing one to try so here are some comments that might help. The Caldwell top has a serious design flaw in the windage adjustment that quickly becomes a limitation to your shooting. Many have started with a Rock BR and traded up rather quickly. Look for a used Caldwell if you want one to start. Add a Shadetree joystick top (375$) is a worthwhile upgrade that works well with the Caldwell base. If money is not an issue then skip the Caldwell completely and shop the other front rests on the market. With free recoil the front rest is what you use to aim the rifle and you will be amazed at how important it is to have one you like.

On the jam question, it is difficult to give you a measurement on where to start but this is what I do. With a case fired at least once so it has some carbon inside the neck, sized as you intend to do it but with no primer or powder, seat your bullet of choice long enough so that the bolt doesn't close. Set the bullet back .005'' at a time until the bolt closes with little effort. The idea is that you do not want to have to wrestle the bolt closed and upset the rifle in the bags on every shot. Take a second unprimed case and fresh bullet seated with the same setting that previously gave easy bolt closing and chamber again. Remove the round and check for marks from the lands. If all the lands are marking evenly around the bullet then I would say that that is your maximum jammin'. You can refine the process or setting but it is important that the round chambers easily and that the bullets don't stick in the lands if you unchamber a live round.

Gringo,
Been using Dan Opel's 64.5 gr. in my 6BR with either H322 or N135. Lapua brass and chambered with JGS no turn reamer (No. 1262).
