NBRSA Nationals - Midland
« on: September 13, 2011, 07:34:24 PM »
Not sure if any other Canucks are going other Dan O and myself so here is a tasty description of the range courtesy of Tim Oltersdorf that is sure to make you want to join us in this treck:

Midland, the land of enchantment awaits you.

Mike Conrey has been busy prepping the Midland range for the upcoming NBRSA nationals and many new improvements have been made. Among these are the following:
The date has been changed to Sept. so as not to coincide with tarantula breeding season and the excitement that routinely occurred in the men's restrooms every morning during the last nationals should be gone.
That pesky thorny plant known locally as the devils tail that used to grow in the loading area has been largely eradicated with the judicious use of a flame thrower and hence no ambulances will be parked at the range blocking the shooters access to the firing line.
The rattlesnake den at the 100 yard line seems to be abandoned because of the drought. This should speed up the target changes.
A new liquor store, titty bar and The National Museum Of Dirt have opened up at the corner of Rankin highway and I-20 tripling the entertainment opportunities in Midland.
A full size wind generator has been erected on the range to supply electricity. Of course the current will vary with the local wind speed. Expected voltage will be between 450-650 KV during the match.
Best of all a full time grief counselor has been hired to assist those shooters who have chosen to shoot the four gun. Tim

Dan and I made it to the range as of about 11:00 am today. Hot and windy, about 34C most of the day. Looks to be about 100-120 shooters. Haven't seen any snakes, scorpions, tarantulas as of yet. Pictures to follow tomorrow as I didn't have the camera at the range today.

Should be interesting, considering how much wind you two can generate on your own. Luck & shoot good.

Today was the last day of practice. Hot and windy again. Small rattlesnake found at the 100 yards target frames today, with a warning over the PA that there could be more, so watch where you are walking. Then setting flags at the end of the day for the start of the Unl 100 Monday morning. No other Canadians drove down. Lawrence Weisdorn who is a transplanted Canuck living in California is here.

Quite a day today. We shot HV 100 only. NBRSA AGM and Unlimited awards took up the afternoon. Winds were out of this world. Probably 25-40 mph, temp dropped to 16-18C from 34C. Dust so thick you could write your name on the bench. Dan shot great and I shot like I had never seen a windflag. Just another day in Midland we are told!

Pictures are of windflags, the new NBRSA magazine due in January, Gene Bucky's collecting his hardware for the Unlimited Grand

Winds finally calmed down today. Lots of mirage replaced it. I finally made the first page of the results, woohoo! Temp was 14C in the morning and 28C in the afternoon. Dan had a surprise visitor at his bench in the form of a bull snake. That got everyone's attention. Tomorrow we shoot Sporter 200 then hit the road.

Just had a short e-mail from Rick from his cell with a photo.  Looks like there is a possibility of a 3 peat............

Wouldn't that be something.

Just got an e-mail back from Rick that the final 2,3,and 4 guns are:

2 Gun and 3 gun Mr. Tony Boyer
4 Gun Mr. John Horn with Gene Bukys 2nd.

I believe at 73 years old Tony is still a force to be reckoned with.

600 rounds, 7 days, and 4200 kms behind us and about 2200 km to get home. Just made it into Colorado now. Calling it a day. It was a great shoot. Many new friendships made. Reminder to book your holidays for Phoenix NBRSA Nats in October 2012. Sorry about the quality of the results photos. They turned out hard to read this time.

Above is Mike Conry who was the Match Director in Midland. Mike doesn't smile for pictures (so he says)! Kudos to Mike, he and his crew put on a fantastic match. Range Officer John, Target crew, scoring, catering all were first rate.

Ken Terrell, Jack Neary, Ryan Harrison

Butch Fsojer, Larry Baggett
