Lenght of pull and overall lenght for stock
« on: July 30, 2012, 01:18:23 PM »
Hi

I'd like to make myself a new stock for my Savage. I am use to shooting prone and to hunting gun, never shot with the "free recoil" technique.

Is there any particular tips you would like to share before I start ? Do I make the LOP shorter, longer or about the same as my hunting stock for a benchrest stock ?

Also, what would be the overall lenght ? I have blanks up to 30 inches, but I can go longer than that.

This is for a "Varmint for Score" rifle, if this helps. I already have the rule book, so I know about the 3 inch wide foreend, the way to measure the slope on the buttstock, and the overall weight.

Thanks a lot for the help.

Bob speaking for myself when I had my stocks done by Robertson Composites I had them made for a finshed length of pull of 12.5".  This made sure I had a bit of extra space for shooting free recoil and that I had enough rearward movement of my scope in the rings.

I guess my suggestion is whatever length works on the bench for you holding the rifle I would just shorten it a tad.  This is just me.

The overall length of my Robertson BRX is 32" and the Robertson JTR is 32 1/2".

Hope this helps.

It helps a lot, thank you.

When I start the stock is this something you would like to see (step by step built) ?

Bob:
Yes, I certainly would like to see a step by step process.  I am just starting a stock today (inspired by your posting on a dealer's website).  This one is for a varmint gun but it might get me to try a benchrest stock.

If you have any questions do not hesitate. Start with the inletting in a square block, and once the barreled action fits, do the exterior. If you do a bedding do it before doing the shape.

Why not Bob?  Show your stock build from start to finish.  That way I can live vicariously through your talents.

Bob,

Chances are I will be at the BR competition in Sandhill on Aug 12 next with a Robertson JTR stocked rifle.
The range is not too far from Thetford Mines and you would be welcome to take some measurements then. You would also see lots of examples of free recoil shooting. Bring a rifle for some shooting at 200 yds.

Thanks for the invite, but I'll be on vacation with the wife at this time, unless I can find a way to persuade her. That for sure would be fun.

I'll see what I can do.... In the meantime the stock is started.
